Using light to balance the historical and modern
We are delighted to have had the opportunity to work with ZAG Architecture to transform what was a medieval military watch tower into a Green Energy Innovation and Research Centre. The architects approached the project in a respectful and considerate manner which enhances historical elements and materials by juxtaposing them against new, more modern interventions.
The lighting is designed to complement both the historic and modern architecture by largely minimising the impact of lighting fixtures aside from feature elements which accentuate focal elements. The interior lighting enhances the materiality of the spaces with decorative lighting used to light the stair which functions as the main element linking the various spaces together. The placement of lighting responds to the architecture and floor plans in a considerate manner helping blend the historic and modern.
The exterior lighting uses minimal lighting levels to suit the dark surroundings and helps emphasise views out to the Monteriggioni Castle. Gentle and soft lighting applied to the corten architectural elements helps create a path after dark to guide visitors through the space. Gentle lighting to olive trees around the site create a sense of boundary and enhances the silver colour of the foliage and the texture of the bark.
