Urban Regeneration

As part of the wider regeneration scheme of Hackney Council, LFB focused on designing the new lighting for the Narroway (north Mare Street) and St. Augustine tower.

An extremely busy thoroughfare was pedestrianised and needed a new approach to lighting which was more focused on a human scale approach which the existing streetlights could not deliver.

The concept to create “everyone’s outdoor living room” was developed following solid analysis based on social research and community engagement undertaken by LFB. The introduction of a catenary system of outdoor ‘lampshades’ creates a unique pedestrian experience for the area without introducing unwanted spill light into residential windows.

The lighting has given what was just another London street a unique character by day and night encouraging people to stop and enjoy the space.
